FIFA and UEFA’s Side of the Story: Expanding the Football Calendar

Both FIFA and UEFA have expanded their competitions in recent years to meet the growing demand for more high-level football. These changes, however, have raised concerns about player health and wellbeing, as the packed schedules increase the risk of fatigue and injury.

FIFA has defended its decision to expand the global football calendar, emphasizing that these changes are essential for the sport’s global growth. The revised calendar, extending through 2030, was developed after consultations with stakeholders, including FIFPRO (the players’ union) and league bodies. FIFA also introduced a 32-team Club World Cup in 2025, designed to offer more clubs a chance to compete at the highest level while ensuring players receive sufficient rest (ESPN, 2025).

Similarly, UEFA has expanded the Champions League starting in the 2024–25 season, increasing the number of teams from 32 to 36. The new format introduces a single-league phase, which raises the total number of matches from 125 to 189 (UEFA, 2025). UEFA justifies the changes by emphasizing increased competition, enhanced fan engagement, and higher revenue through broadcasting and sponsorships, which will be reinvested into European football development (UEFA, 2025).
